This is the comparison I get asked about most, because both carriers offer unlimited coverage. The difference is in the structure. Healthy Paws gives you traditional reimbursement — pay the vet, submit a claim, get paid back in 2–10 days. Trupanion pays the vet directly at checkout through their hospital network.

That direct-pay model is genuinely valuable during a $10,000 emergency when you do not have the cash to front. However, Trupanion only offers 90% reimbursement with no flexibility, while Healthy Paws lets you choose 70%, 80%, or 90%. Trupanion's premiums tend to run 15–25% higher for comparable coverage. Both are backed by strong underwriters, but Chubb's $200B+ asset base gives Healthy Paws a slight edge on long-term stability.

My recommendation: if direct vet payment matters to you (and it should if you do not have $5K–$10K liquid), Trupanion is worth the premium. Otherwise, Healthy Paws gives you more flexibility at a lower cost.
