Our Methodology

How we evaluate and rank pet insurance carriers — a transparent look at our analytical framework.

At VETX, we evaluate pet insurance carriers using the same analytical rigor applied to commercial insurance underwriting. Our methodology is designed to cut through marketing claims and provide pet owners with objective, data-driven assessments.

Four Pillars of Evaluation

1. Coverage Comprehensiveness (30%)

We read the actual policy language — not just the marketing summary. We evaluate what's covered, what's excluded, and the fine print that most review sites ignore. Key factors include coverage limits (annual, per-incident, lifetime), hereditary and congenital condition coverage, bilateral condition coverage, alternative therapy coverage, prescription medication coverage, and behavioral treatment coverage. We pay special attention to waiting periods, as these vary significantly between carriers and can leave new policyholders exposed during critical early months.

2. Premium Affordability (25%)

We analyze premium structures across multiple pet profiles (young dogs, senior cats, high-risk breeds, etc.) to understand true cost-of-ownership. We evaluate not just the base premium, but also how premiums change with age, the impact of deductible and reimbursement choices on total cost, multi-pet discounts, and the historical rate increase patterns. A carrier with low initial premiums but aggressive annual increases may cost more over a pet's lifetime than one with higher starting premiums and stable rates.

3. Claims Experience (25%)

The true test of any insurance policy is how it performs at claims time. We evaluate average claim processing time, claim approval rates, ease of the claims submission process, direct vet payment options, customer satisfaction scores, and complaint ratios filed with state insurance departments. We also consider the transparency of the claims process — carriers that clearly communicate coverage decisions and provide detailed explanations score higher.

4. Financial Stability (20%)

This is where our insurance industry expertise provides the most value. Most pet insurance review sites don't evaluate the financial stability of the underwriting carrier — but this is critical. We examine AM Best ratings of the underwriting carrier, the relationship between the MGA (Managing General Agent) and the underwriter, the carrier's loss ratio and combined ratio, reinsurance arrangements, and the long-term sustainability of the business model. A carrier backed by a financially strong underwriter (like Chubb, rated A+ by AM Best) provides significantly more security than one backed by a lesser-known entity.

Rating Scale

4.5 – 5.0OutstandingExceptional across all four evaluation pillars
4.0 – 4.4ExcellentStrong performance with minor areas for improvement
3.5 – 3.9GoodSolid option with notable strengths and some weaknesses
3.0 – 3.4FairAdequate coverage but significant areas of concern
Below 3.0Below AverageNot recommended due to material deficiencies

Update Frequency

We review and update our ratings quarterly, or whenever a carrier makes a material change to their coverage, pricing, or claims process. Major events like underwriter changes, significant rate increases, or regulatory actions trigger immediate re-evaluation.
