Our Verdict

Healthy Paws wins decisively for dogs and cats with unlimited coverage, faster claims, and lower premiums. Nationwide wins only if you have exotic pets — it's the sole major carrier covering birds, reptiles, and other exotics.

This is a David vs. Goliath comparison, but not in the way you might expect. Nationwide is a Fortune 100 company with massive brand recognition, but their pet insurance product is not their strongest offering. Healthy Paws is a pet insurance specialist with unlimited coverage and a focused product.

Nationwide offers the only pet insurance that covers exotic pets (birds, reptiles, etc.), which is a unique advantage. But for dogs and cats, their coverage limits ($7,500–$10,000 annually on most plans) are significantly lower than Healthy Paws' unlimited structure. Nationwide's Whole Pet plan is better, but premiums are substantially higher. The financial stability argument favors Nationwide on paper — they are one of the largest insurers in the world.

But Healthy Paws is backed by Chubb, which is no slouch at A+ rated with $200B+ in assets. For standard dog and cat coverage, Healthy Paws offers a superior product. Nationwide only wins if you have exotic pets or want to bundle with other Nationwide products.
