Head-to-Head Comparison
MetLife vs. Pumpkin
Two newer carriers with very different waiting-period and coverage philosophies
Our Verdict
Genuinely the closest matchup in this batch. MetLife wins decisively on waiting periods (zero-day accidents) and Fortune 100 financial scale. Pumpkin wins on the higher reimbursement floor (80% minimum) and orthopedic-friendly structure. For most buyers I lean MetLife, but it is a real coin flip for orthopedic-prone breeds.

This is the most interesting head-to-head in the entire batch, and I do not want to fake confidence I don't have. Both carriers re-launched into the market around 2020 — MetLife rebranded the 16-year-old PetFirst program, Pumpkin entered fresh with Crum & Forster underwriting. Neither has the long renewal-pricing track record that Healthy Paws or Trupanion offer. Where they genuinely diverge is structure.
MetLife has the zero-day accident wait — coverage at midnight on the effective date, period — and Pumpkin makes you wait the standard 14 days. That is a 14-day gap on the most common type of early-policy claim. But Pumpkin counters with no separate orthopedic waiting period (most carriers including MetLife do not have one either, but for different structural reasons), an 80%/90%-only reimbursement floor that prevents you from accidentally buying watered-down coverage, and PumpkinNow which deposits emergency claims of $1,000+ in 15 minutes. MetLife brings the Fortune 100 balance sheet, the Family Plan for multi-pet households, and the diminishing deductible.
Pumpkin's Preventive Essentials is technically a non-insurance refund product — a structural distinction worth understanding. For new-puppy owners, MetLife. For owners specifically prioritizing the higher reimbursement floor and PumpkinNow emergency speed, Pumpkin. Reasonable people land on either.
